COURSE DESCRIPTION

 

This course is a survey course of the chronological history and theory of design and art in relation to the contemporary political, socio-economic factors, philosophy and religion. It is aimed to bring a critical analysis towards architecture, art, and design besides showing the universally accepted values for treatment of creative mind of the designers, architects and artists. The subjects will range from early Christian to the Renaissance Period.

 

INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES

After completing this course students should be able to:

 

·        To understand the development of the architecture language from the Early Christian to the Renaissance Period.

·        To distinguish various elements of style, describe changes in style, and recognize the movement of style across time and place.

·        To understand the forces that philosophy, religion, climate, and building technology has played in influencing the development of differing styles and individual buildings.

·        To understand that monumental buildings and urban spaces can express religious and/or political ideals.

·        To develop an understanding of the methods of historical inquiry and to gain the ability to conduct simple historical research.

·        To become aware of ancient architecture’s influence on many of today’s most noted architects.

·        Specify ways in which tools, materials, techniques, and technological developments impact the creative process.
